New Pen Day!

So exciting when you get a new pen in the mail - in this case I missed the courier so had to wait a whole extra day before going to the post office to pick it up. Oh, the suspense! This pen is a bit of a diversion from my usual Sailor or Lamy purchases. It's an Opus 88 in beige. My first pen of this type so can't wait to ink it up. I got a medium nib for this one so will be interesting to see how it goes.  The day after I got it it was cloudy which means 'photo time' - my new pen has had it...

Supernova New Pen Day!

The latest edition to my small but growing Sailor fountain pen collection arrived in the mail today. It's the fabulously sparkly Supernova. Its beautiful red sparklyness will be appearing along with its sidekick, Purple Cosmos, in some pouch and pillow photos soon. In the meantime, the Supernova has had its first photoshoot as I opened it this morning. These photos were taken with my phone in not so good light - I'll take some better ones soon. Enjoy :-) ! #hurlestonenz...

New babies

I was lucky to have some new babies turn up in the mail this week. My new Lamy pastels - Mint Glaze, Powder Rose and Blue Macaron. I couldn't wait to take photos of them with various pen pouches. Fortunately for me the weather was cloudy so the light was just right for photos. It was also fortunate that I had made a three slot pen pouch just for them - a customised two pen pouch with less width in the slots but still big enough to put a few Lamys in there....

Petrol never looked so good!

Introducing the Burlington - available now in 1, 2, and 4 pen pouch sizes only on the website.  Burlington is made from petrol-coloured upholstery fabric and lined with Teal velvet to nestle and protect your pens. You can easily clip your pens to the Burlington and it has a back pocket for your stuff on the 2 and 4 pen pouches.  I really like this colour and love how it looks with my dark Lamys in it - the Petrol and the Black. If you're a Lamy Petrol fan then this is the pouch for you...

The Monarch has landed

It's new pen pouch day today. The Monarch is the latest colour to join the range of 1, 2 and 4 pen pouches, so I think I have covered all the bases here with this one. It's a beautiful deep purple with specks of yellow on the outside and a delightful ray of sunshine yellow on the inside. I've lined it with soft Citrus velvet so your pens will sleep safely inside wherever you go.I have also made the Mocha and Carson 4 pen pouches which are also available in the 1 pen pouch size (you just nee...

How about some light?

Today I've added the Pearl and Wheatstone pen pouches into the range. These two are lighter coloured pouches - the Pearl is cream/grey and the Wheatstone is well, wheat coloured. They are both lined with cream velvety goodness and look fantastic with pens in them.  Won't they get grubby? If they do you can clean them by dabbing with a damp cloth and mild detergent just like you would with other upholstery fabrics. These pouches, like all the others in the range, will protect your pens for a...

The single pen pouch is now available!

I've been busy making pouches all week. The first to be released is the new Single pen pouch. This was originally a request for a custom pouch but I really liked it so I decided to add it to the range. Now Hurlestone pen pouches come in Single, 2 pen and 4 pen sizes.  I have photographed the Single pouch in Georgie fabric but you can click on the list and select it in a range of other colours. This week it's the feature pouch, so go ahead and get one for your collection. @hurlestonenz...

A new baby!

My new baby arrived this week - a beautiful Sailor Key Lime. It is an interesting colour being more olive green than the bright green you see in advertising, and on closer inspection it has a pearlescent swirl in the colour that is quite attractive. I really like it being such a 'different' colour and look forward to using it in my product photos - I think it will look fantastic with the Leaf pen pouches and just fabulous with Ammonite, Chelford and Charcoal pouches and associated pen pillows.&n...

Updates & Changes

I've been busy lately making a few changes to things so there has not been much time for sewing or thinking about anything new. Those of you who have visited the site in the past may want to have another look as we have changed the way we do things in the shop to try and make it a little easier for you and for me when I do updates and editing. Now, when you are picking a pen pouch you can also choose a matching pen pillow or pillows to go with the order, saving you time and any confusion about w...

New Colours

Today I have added three new blues (teals/blues, etc) to the family - the Matrix, Seaweave and Skye pen pouches for both two and four pens. The Matrix and Skye pouches are lined with a lovely light blue velvet and the Seaweave with turquoise.  I quite like the lighter fabrics of the Matrix and Skye and so a few more in the lighter shades are in the pipeline. The Seaweave I came across at a local supplier and thought it might make a great pouch and was so pleased with how it turned out. It l...

Sometimes things go wrong

Some days things go really well and other days they just don't....... When I make the pouches and pillows it doesn't always go smoothly and sometimes, rather annoyingly, I don't discover something has gone wrong until I have finished or almost finished making the product. In some cases the problem can be fixed but in a few it's too late and they have to be consigned to the reject bin (thankfully, my reject bin doesn't have much in it!). Some have suggested I sell them as seconds, and perhaps I w...

Those hidden pen slots.....

When you see the finished pen pouch it might look as though the pen slots are not completely separate as you can only see the bit of sewing near the top of the pouch. I like to see (and I'm sure you do too) the finished pen pouch without lines all down the outside of it, so I hide all the sewing by taking some extra steps to sew all the slots before putting the outer parts of the pouch together.  In the first photo you can see I have marked out the slots with tailors chalk on one pen pouch ...

Pen Pouches for 4 Pens

I am in the process of creating/sewing new pen pouches that will hold 4 pens. Previously I have made the Navy pouch and since then the Veela, and now the Imanda with both the Paprika and new Rust velvet lining. I have also added the Rust velvet lining option to the Imanda 2 Pen Pouch so check them out and see what you think. I really like the Rust colour - it's warm and sumptuous and goes with just about any colour pen. My intention is to keep sewing right up until Christmas and then take a brea...

New Product!

Check out our Instagram and Twitter feeds for news of our brand new, hot off the sewing machine four pen pouch!I had made a demo one some time ago and had been thinking about it for next year, but was encouraged in an email discussion to make one now rather than wait and I am pretty pleased with it. The first one is the Navy pouch with slightly smaller in width slots but still with ample room for those larger than life pens some of us just have to have in our collections. It just looks so good w...

In the moment

Prior to being introduced to fountain pens, I never thought of pens as anything other than something to write with. A tactile behaviour so commonplace, the joy of which is overlooked by so many in favour of the incessant tapping on so-called time-saving devices or the unconscious use of the humble ballpoint pen to tick a box or sign our name - which is also slowly being replaced by the use of a plastic stick or your finger on a touch screen. The use of a fountain pen to write, well, anything is ...

Friendly packaging

Packaging is important to us and to you - after all, you want to receive your purchase in tip top shape. While this is important so too are other considerations. Packaging is no easy thing these days. Businesses are beginning to shy away from all things plastic to materials that cause less harm to our environment. At Hurlestone we send your package to you in a recyclable cardboard box. Inside the box you will find some interesting fill - it's called pop starch®. It is made in New Zealand (just l...

Making pen pouches and pillows

The pen pouches we sell are all handmade. Each one is cut individually with a really sharp cutting tool -  the velvet lining has to be cut separately as it moves quite a lot when it is layered. Some of the fabric I use cannot be pressed with any heat so I do it by hand - takes a little time but that's usually when I have my coffee. I then sew all the bands and the back pockets ready for assembly. The tag is also sewn to the front piece of the pouch. Once that's all done its time to put it t...

Where our pouches and pillows are created

I'm lucky enough to have a spare room in my home where I can create and sew the pouches and pillows. It's very easy to spend the whole day in here once I get going and very satisfying to see a neat pile of finished product at the end of the day. ...
